The Best New Year's Resolution I Ever Made... (Can You Guess What it Was?)

So it happens every year about this time. Much thought can be given to it for weeks, or even months, but it all comes down to that magical date on the calendar. It's a time when so many of us commit or resolve to make some kind of change for the better. It is seen as a new beginning, a renewal of commitment. But doesn't that one day carry too much weight? Doesn't that allow you to feel like the rest of the year doesn't quite matter?

With so much riding on the particular date does that set you up for failure or disappointment? Why would this absolute date mean you can be more successful than any other time? What happens then, if you don't follow through? Do you have to wait another year to commit (like all good diets start on a Monday)? How do you feel? Do you beat yourself up, feel worse than you did before because you did not have the power to change the very habit that you felt strongly committed to change? You declared it a resolution, after all. Or do you just throw your hands up in the air and decide it's no big deal, just your usual M.O. --though you really are frustrated or disappointed with yourself?

You may have heard by now, possibly more than once, when you have a big goal it helps to break it up into smaller, more manageable/easily attainable pieces. So...why not make every day a commitment to be your best? You begin a new day every 24 hours anyway. You go to bed at the end of your day and wake up with a new day ahead, full of choices. You may have some items set on a schedule that is not in your control i.e. work, carpooling, school. But within that new day you can still choose what you will eat, how you feel, and what you can do in the hours ahead to improve your world and the world around you. You can resolve to make each day better-- each day a new start.

Why wait for once a year?
A long-term goal can be divided into smaller pieces so that there can be a mini-goal every 24 hours. Bit by bit the long-term goal will be reached.

So... If you haven't guessed it by now:

The best New Year's Resolution I ever made was to never make another New Year's Resolution--

but to resolve to make each day the best in the way it needs to be that day

My DAILY resolution is to be grateful for what I have, be content with who I am, but strive to be better in the ways that matter. No more waiting for Monday to start a new diet (how many times have YOU done that?) No waiting for the first of the month or a specific date to start a new exercise program or healthy habit. And NO MORE waiting for New Year's Eve to make good on a promise to myself! If there is a change for the better to be made, what is the point of waiting? If there's a chance to improve, the earlier-- the better, each and EVERY day. Part of that daily commitment is to realize my blessings and be a blessing to someone else. This is now a daily goal and a resolution I can keep!

Its a very good way to be Healthy and Happy!
